Can I Sell My MOT Failure Car As It Stands?
You can ask us about selling without paying for the repairs or a retest first. Send your registration, tell us what the test found and give us the postcode where the car is parked. We’ll review the details and discuss an offer with you.
An MOT failure is not the same for every car. One vehicle may need a small repair; another may have corrosion, emissions trouble and several worn parts. The test result helps explain the problem, but its age, mileage and overall condition matter too.
When Another MOT Repair No Longer Makes Sense
You may have a repair estimate that is more than you want to spend, particularly on an older car. Selling can be an option when you no longer need the vehicle or would rather put the money towards something else. You don’t have to make that decision before asking what we may be able to offer.
Compare the complete repair bill, not just the most obvious fault. If there are advisories or other jobs likely to follow, keep those in mind too. We won’t tell you that every failed car should be scrapped; an enquiry simply gives you another option.
What Does the MOT Failure Notice Tell Us?
The result lists the defects found during the test. Share the major or dangerous problems and mention any other known faults. If you have a printed refusal certificate or a garage estimate, that can help you explain the work needed.
An advisory is different from a failure item. If you are unsure which is which, use the wording on the result instead of guessing. We can discuss the enquiry without asking you to translate everything into garage terminology.
Can the Car Still Be Driven?
Please don’t drive a car to us just to obtain a quotation. A previous MOT certificate does not automatically make a failed vehicle safe to drive. A car with a dangerous defect must not be driven until that problem has been repaired.
GOV.UK explains when a failed vehicle may be taken away: the existing MOT must still be valid, there must be no dangerous defects, and it must remain roadworthy. If you are unsure, leave it parked and discuss collection instead. The official MOT guidance below explains the rules.
Selling a Car With No MOT or an Expired Test
You can also enquire if the MOT has expired or the car has been off the road for a while. Tell us the last test result you know about and why it has not been used. Do not book a new test only for the sake of requesting our quote.
If the battery is flat or the tyres have gone down while it has been standing, mention that too. A car may start but still be unsuitable for driving. We need to discuss its actual condition and location before collection is agreed.
MOT-Failure Car Collection From Home or a Garage
Give us the full postcode of the car’s current location. Tell us whether it is on a driveway, in a shared parking area or still with the test centre. Mention missing keys, locked wheels, a narrow entrance or another car blocking it in.
If it is at a garage, check who can release it and whether there are any outstanding charges or arrangements to settle. We’ll discuss the collection details with you before a date is agreed. There is no need to move an unsafe vehicle into the road.
Paperwork When You Sell an MOT Failure
Have the keys, V5C log book and any useful sale or ownership documents ready if you have them. Let us know about a missing log book, outstanding finance or an enquiry made on somebody else’s behalf. Being the person who can access the car does not by itself mean you can sell it.
DVLA needs to be told when you sell or scrap the car. If it is destroyed, it must be scrapped at an authorised treatment facility. Follow the official guidance linked below; we’ll discuss the relevant handover paperwork before you proceed.
MOT Problems We Welcome Enquiries About
Tell us what appears on your result and any other faults you already know about. These examples are a guide to describing the car, not a remote assessment of whether it is safe.
Brake defects
Share the test result for brakes, parking brakes or related warning lights. Never assume the car is safe to drive because it still seems to stop.
Suspension and steering
Include worn or damaged suspension and steering parts listed on the test. Let us know if a wheel has moved out of position or the car cannot be moved.
Corrosion and welding
Explain where the examiner found corrosion and whether you have a welding estimate. Photos or the test wording can help describe the issue without taking anything apart.
Tyres, lights and several smaller faults
A number of jobs can add up, even when each looks manageable. Give us the whole list rather than just the first failure item.
Emissions failures
Tell us the result and any diagnosis already made. An emissions failure alone does not identify the component at fault, so avoid guessing that a particular part must be replaced.
Non-runners and other damage
An MOT failure may also have starting problems, engine trouble or accident damage. Mention these separately so the enquiry reflects the complete car.
Questions About Selling an MOT Failure
Can I sell my MOT failure car without a retest?
Yes, you can enquire about the car in its current condition. Tell us the result and any repairs already carried out. You do not need to obtain a pass certificate just to request a quote.
Do you consider cars with dangerous MOT defects?
You can tell us about the vehicle and its defects. Do not drive it with an unrepaired dangerous defect. Explain where it is parked so we can discuss whether collection can be arranged.
Can I sell a car with an expired MOT?
Yes, you can ask about selling a car whose MOT has run out. Tell us how long it has been unused and any known faults. There is no need to drive it for a quotation.
Is an MOT failure only worth its scrap value?
Not necessarily. The model, condition, completeness and possible use for the car or its parts can also matter. We’ll discuss your own car rather than assume that every failed vehicle has the same value.
What details from the test should I send?
Start with the registration and the major or dangerous defects on the result. Include other known problems and a garage estimate if you already have one. Plain wording is fine; you don’t need to diagnose the cause.
Can you discuss collection from the test centre?
Yes. Give us the address and explain the parking arrangements. Check with the garage about access, release of the car and anything outstanding before collection is agreed.
Do MOT advisories mean I have to sell or scrap the car?
No. Advisories flag things to monitor or repair; they do not automatically mean the car has failed. If you have decided the car is no longer for you, you can still request a quotation and consider your options.
Does asking for a quote commit me to selling?
No. The quotation is free and there is no obligation to accept. We’ll talk through the car, the offer and collection before you decide whether to proceed.

What Is My MOT Failure Car Worth?
An MOT result is useful information, but it is only part of a valuation. Make, model, mileage, bodywork, missing parts and the extent of the repairs can all affect an offer. A car needing welding may be considered differently from one with a single electrical problem.
When comparing offers, tell each buyer about the same faults and check what collection includes. Avoid treating an online headline price as a promise for your vehicle. The main scrap car prices page explains the broader factors behind an individual quote.
