Can I Sell My Written Off Car?
A written-off car is an insurance decision, not a description you need to work out yourself. Before asking about a sale, check what your insurer has agreed and whether the vehicle is yours to dispose of. If the claim or retention arrangements are unfinished, explain that at the start.
There is no pressure to decide while you are gathering information. Start with your registration, explain the condition in your own words and tell us where the vehicle is parked. We can discuss a quotation without asking you to authorise repairs or accept an offer first.
Start With the Confirmed Write-Off Category
GOV.UK distinguishes repairable Category S and N vehicles from Category A and B disposal cases. Category A must be crushed in its entirety; Category B shells must be crushed, though some parts may be salvaged. Do not present an A or B vehicle as a repairable road car. We need the confirmed category before discussing an enquiry.
Retained Salvage and the Right to Sell
Ask your insurer whether you are retaining the vehicle and keep the relevant confirmation. A payout alone does not tell us who can authorise its release. If a finance company or another owner is involved, that also needs to be settled. We cannot promise to purchase every written-off car or deal with the insurer on your behalf.
Explain the Car’s Present Condition
A written-off car may be complete, partly repaired or already dismantled. Tell us what has changed since the insurer assessed it. Include deployed airbags, missing major parts and damage that stops it moving. The offer needs to concern the car as it stands now, rather than an old description before repairs or dismantling began.
What to Include in Your Enquiry
Give us the registration, mileage if known and the postcode where the vehicle is now. Add the main problem and other faults, accident damage or missing parts. A useful description does not need to be technical; just tell us what you know and say when something is uncertain.
If you have a garage report, an MOT result or repair estimate already, the details can help. You do not need to buy another inspection solely for our quotation. Let us know if work has started or the vehicle has changed since a report was written.
Collection: What We Need to Know
Confirm the storage address and who can release the written-off car. Tell us if it cannot roll, has exposed damage or needs particular recovery equipment. Insurer or yard arrangements must be settled before collection can be agreed.
Please mention a narrow entrance, underground parking, another vehicle blocking access or a garage holding the keys. Tell us who can authorise release if the car is away from your home. We will discuss the practical details and what the offer includes before you decide, rather than assume every location or vehicle needs the same arrangements.
Helpful Details About Your Written-off car
These points help explain the written-off car you want to sell. Just tell us what you know. You do not need to diagnose the problem yourself.
Confirmed category
Pass on the insurer’s category rather than guessing from the repair bill.
Structural damage
Share inspection findings without trying to assess the structure yourself.
Retained vehicle
Explain whether the insurer has agreed that you are keeping the car.
Incomplete repairs
List work started, loose parts and anything removed from the car.
Open claim
Tell us if the claim or ownership arrangements are still being settled.
Collection restrictions
Mention recovery-yard storage, locked wheels and release requirements.
Questions About Selling a Written-off car
Can I sell a written-off car I have retained?
You can enquire once your right to sell is clear. We need the category, damage and retention details before considering the next step.
Are all write-offs repairable?
No. Category A and B have disposal restrictions. Category S and N can be repaired to a roadworthy condition, but the category does not establish current safety.
Can I sell before my insurer finishes the claim?
Do not agree disposal while authority or ownership is unclear. Speak to the insurer and explain the unfinished claim when contacting us.
Will you buy every write-off category?
Acceptance is not automatic. Tell us the confirmed category and condition first so we can discuss whether the enquiry is suitable.
What if parts have already been removed?
List what is missing and what loose parts are included. That may affect value and how the written-off car can be moved.
Do I still need to tell DVLA?
The correct notification depends on what happens to the vehicle. Use the official DVLA guidance and discuss the handover paperwork before completing a sale.
How do I request a quote for a written-off car?
Enter your registration in the quotation box, then describe the condition and where the vehicle is parked. Include the details you already know; you can also call 07931 744064 if it is easier to explain.
Do I have to accept the offer?
No. The quotation is free and there is no obligation to sell. Take time to ask questions, understand the offer and discuss collection before you decide whether to go ahead.

What Could a Written-off car Be Worth?
The value of a written-off car depends on its category, model, age, damage and completeness. A previous insurance value is not the same as an offer for the retained vehicle. Explain the present state and make sure any comparison uses the same collection and included-parts details.
Be clear about what is included in the sale and ask what collection involves. A figure for a different vehicle, or its value before a fault or accident, is not a reliable comparison. Our main scrap car prices guide explains general factors; your offer needs to reflect the vehicle you have actually described.
